Why do we vote on 1st Tuesday in November?
I voted and had a question and thought i knew the smart answer, i was almost right.
If you mean U.S. Election Day, it’s on Tuesday mainly because that fit the lives of farmers in the 1800s.
In 1845, Congress set presidential Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November:
- Travel took time. Many rural voters needed a day to reach their polling place. Tuesday voting let them travel on Monday without disrupting Sunday worship.
- Wednesday was often market day, so Tuesday avoided that conflict.
- November followed the harvest, but usually came before severe winter weather, making it a practical time for farmers to vote.
- “After the first Monday” kept Election Day from falling on November 1, which was All Saints’ Day for some Christians and a date often used for settling business accounts.
The schedule later became the standard for federal general elections. Today, many voters can vote early or by mail, so voting isn’t necessarily limited to Tuesday.
If you could vote for me with a like, comment or review on google i will get elected, lol
